Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) will host a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-sponsored workshop on dual-fuel heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) applications and associated control technologies. The workshop will take place October 27-28, 2026, at Discovery Hall, located at 650 Horn Rapids Road in Richland, Washington. This first-of-its-kind workshop will bring together industry leaders, researchers, utilities, and other experts to discuss ongoing research, implementation, barriers, and opportunities for residential and commercial dual-fuel applications. These technologies can reduce energy bills, improve reliability and comfort, and provide significant operational flexibility. The workshop will explore the outstanding technical challenges to realize these benefits at scale and foster collaboration among key stakeholders.

WHY ATTEND?

Participants will identify key research, market, and workforce needs for affordable dual-fuel systems, examine existing and emerging control strategies for dual fuel HVAC, and discuss enabling hardware. Through interactive breakout sessions, expert panels, and PNNL facility tours, the event will foster collaboration and help accelerate innovations that enhance U.S. competitiveness.

WHAT TO EXPECT

• Identify key research needs and facilitate partnerships to address system integration, implementation, and cost barriers for dual fuel HVAC and controls.

• Strengthen connections and collaborations across OEMs, the Department of Energy’s National Laboratories, utilities, and others to focus research activities and accelerate near- and long-term solutions that position U.S.-based OEMs for global competitiveness.

• Identify information gaps that would enable accurate assessments to optimize energy use, enhance flexibility, and reduce operational costs to utilities and other end-users. Discuss supply-chain and transition challenges, including production capacity, distribution, and long-term availability.
